Defying the Odds: Epic River Celebrates 10 Years

Posted by Jessica Toney | Aug 4, 2015 8:10:02 AM

10 years.  A decade.   According to David Wallace of Small Business Trends (http://smallbiztrends.com/2013/03/infographic-failed-small-businesses.html), if a business is started with fewer than 20 people, only 9 out of every 100 make it to 10 years.  I'm glad I didn't know that statistic 10 years ago because 3 people is DEFINITELY less than 20, making that 9% survival rate worse than dismal!

But here we are.  10 years ago Epic River was founded in an 8 x 8 room filled with three desks and three people, who were certain they could accelerate the process of innovation.  We knew it wouldn't be easy, but we didn't know it would be this bizarre. I remember being exhausted and eating dinner at an Asian restaurant after our first official presentation in Dallas, Texas, when Steve and I both got the same fortune cookies, "You will be unusually successful in business."  I wish I had known the emphasis was on the word "unusually."

Without question, we have accelerated the process and created innovative software.  We have shortened design to development to release so far that most of our customers are surprised it is even possible.  We have released more products across more industries than I ever would have imagined.  Some have been very successful while others were...well...others have been great learning experiences.  We learned on the fly through our unexpected growth curves, and we skimped and saved and survived through the most difficult financial recession of our lives.

No matter the reason for the success or failure, we have always remained grounded in belief that the people who implement the process are paramount to successful innovation.  We win together, and we lose together.  We drink beers of celebration and beers of sorrow.  We don't focus on who is to blame; we simply take steps to ensure that we never fail in that way again.

It is a testament to the people here that our first customer is still a customer, and we continue to deepen our relationship with them every year.  I'm proud to say that 10 years later, our first product (after many, many iterations) is still profitable for us AND our customer, AND it is still considered "high tech" and "innovative" by many potential customers.

So after 10 amazing years, we just want to take a moment to say thank you to our teammates, our customers, our partners and our families.  You have all been instrumental to our past accomplishments, and we know you'll be just as important to our future success.  It's been a long, strange road, but I'm not sure we would have chosen any other.
